EV Charger Installation: What Idaho Homeowners Need to Know

Thinking about installing a home EV charger in Twin Falls? Here's what the electrical upgrade involves, what it costs, and why a licensed electrician is non-negotiable.

Level 1 vs. Level 2: The Key Decision

Every EV comes with a Level 1 charger — the one that plugs into a standard 120V outlet. It adds roughly 4–5 miles of range per hour. If you drive fewer than 30 miles a day, this might be enough.

Level 2 charging uses a 240V circuit (same as your dryer) and adds 15–30 miles per hour. A full charge overnight. This is what most EV owners end up wanting within 6 months of ownership.

What a Level 2 Installation Involves

A proper Level 2 installation requires a licensed electrician to:

  • Assess your electrical panel capacity
  • Run a dedicated 240V/50A circuit from the panel to your garage
  • Install a NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwired EVSE (charger)
  • Pull a permit with the City of Twin Falls
  • Schedule the inspection

Panel Upgrade: Do You Need One?

Older Twin Falls homes (pre-1990) often have 100-amp panels. EV chargers need 50 amps dedicated — plus your existing loads. If your panel is already near capacity, we'll need to upgrade to 200 amps before installing the charger. We'll assess this in the initial walkthrough.

Idaho Rebates and Incentives

The federal EV charger tax credit (30C) covers 30% of installation costs up to $1,000 for residential installations. Idaho Power also offers periodic rebates for qualifying EV charger installations. We stay current on available incentives and can help you document the installation for tax purposes.

Why a Licensed Electrician Matters

DIY EV charger installs fail inspections, void home insurance policies, and are a fire risk. A licensed installation with a permit protects your investment and your family.
